Rather than put this on the old released thread, I wanted to start a fresh one since it has to do with updated information. I just got this in my mail from The Washington Post. It seems that Bergdahl was dealing with some pretty severed mental health issues and should have never been allowed in the Army, had it been doing its job properly.

I urge all to read this.

it is so hard for me not to see things as black or white. I know the world presents itself in colors and a full spectrum beyond my sense of sight. sunburns and cell phone calls are things my other senses and technology are needed to reveal.
I know more today than I did yesterday. the more I know, the more I want to know.
how many unstable individuals is our military training, arming, and returning home?
have the standards for service been reduced or were the standards ignored?
this is more than a story about exchanging prisoners of war. I want to understand why the story did not end with his discharge from the coast guard?

To clear things up about this douchebag the army did not ignore standards they where lowered twice. During the War in Iraq and Afghanistan the military was not meeting quota in recruiting so they lowered the standards in 2003 to not having to have a diploma and then in 2007 to waivers for felons, as well as obesity, and minuim standards for physical fitness this resulted in the shitty soldiers we have today such as Bergdahl. Not that the Army is downsizing standards are returning and now soldiers are being released to meet the numbers for downsizing. And the Army did not start psychological profiling till Fort Hood shotting.

With any government scandal there will always be aspects of the story that we will never hear about and will always be a mystery. It's always easier to ask why after a situation than before. We know from example that the government doesn't put much stock in metal health, they don't do much to look for it and they don't much to help with it. Prisoners get more help reentering society than a soldier does. Look at the scandal involving the Veterans hospitals once they're out of the service Uncle Sam wants to pretend that they never existed and treats them like a nuisance. They keep doing public service announcements saying that if you have certain feelings you should seek help but the truth of the matter is that there is no help available if you're not a wealthy person, insurance isn't much use either because it has very limited coverage for mental health issues and often has much higher copayments that people can't afford. Even if you do have insurance in many places it's nearly impossible to find a Dr. and when you do you have to wait 3 to 6 months for an appointment and by then it's often too late.
